Retox

The month before our wedding, Dave and I went on a detox diet where we ate no refined sugar, wheat products, meat (except fish), tomatoes, spinach, or dairy. We ate three servings of vegetables, salad, and fruit per day, two servings of rice and fish or nuts, and one serving of grapes, cantaloupe, carrot juice, lemon and honey water. We stuck to it for 25 days and each lost at least 5 pounds without doing any exercise.
I think it’s time to do it again. In the months since the wedding, we have most definitely “retoxed” ourselves, despite our very simple diet (a typical dinner at home is rice, tofu and veggies, maybe some miso soup, and romaine lettuce salad if we have it). But every so often I overdo it on the saturated fats (tonight, it was cheese dip at Z’Tejas and ranch dressing) and feel really gross. I’m not used to feeling this way anymore and I don’t like it.
If I have strict rules, I am more likely not to gorge myself on sweets. That is, if the rule is “no sugar,” I can stick to that better than “one piece of chocolate” or “one bowl of ice cream.” Once I start, I can’t stop. The “no sweets” rule was the hardest for me during pre-wedding detox, but in the end it was also the easiest. My cravings stopped.
I’m thinking we’ll do a month of detox after my job ends on January 5. That’s right – I am stopping work at this private firm and will be taking up a position with the federal government practicing immigration law. It’s a big switch and took a lot of prayer and consideration, but I believe it’s the right decision. More on that later.
