My Other “DS”;

I got a Nintendo DS on Black Friday, thanks to Audrey who stood in line at Fry’s from 11:00pm to 5:00am with her friends and rushed in to get me the limited Zelda edition –

zelda edition

I’ve been playing it so much that Dave complains that I am obsessed with my other DS. To which I respond that he is obsessed with his other CSS.

  • haha, that’s cute!

I told Audrey to leave hers at home – it’s finals week!

  • I got the same one, but at GameStop, since I had won some gift certificates at work.  With trade-in credit I had for some <span class="caps">GBA</span> games, I ended up only paying about $18 for it.

I beat Phantom Hourglass about a week ago.  I’m missing about 6 ship parts and 5 of the gems, but after you beat it, its kind of hard to go back and do all the little side quests.  Also, I didn’t get the heart container for getting 2000 pts at the arrow game.  you have to hit every target.  what a pain in the ass.  I got about 1850 before I quit trying.

    This is my next purchase:

  • Katy – I should probably leave mine at home once in a while… but I gotta do something during my commute time!

Batman – Dang, can’t beat that deal. Did you use any walkthroughs for Zelda? I don’t like following them, so I do my best until I get stuck, then I refer to the walkthrough only for that part. I’m only at the Ghost Ship, and I’m already having trouble remembering all the items and treasure I have to go back for. The target game is really hard – I don’t think I’m going to persist in that. What about the ghost shooting game on Molida Island – what do you get if you break Romanos’ record?

Why do you want CycloDS? Can’t you just look up the cheats on the web, and use an iPod as an MP3 player?

  • That’s pretty funny.

You have any other games? I recommend ‘Elite Beat Agents’,which is a music game, and ‘Phoenix Wright’, which is an adventure game (about lawyers!).

  • i generally play through a dungeon and then read the <span class="caps">FAQ</span> on that dungeon to make sure i didn’t miss anything and have to backtrack later.

i beat the target shooting game after 5 or 6 tries.  i think you get a bomb bag the first time you beat the record, and some of the harder to get ship pieces or a big green rupee upon subsequent high scores.  dont really remember.  its the ghost shooting game i gave up on.  i think you get a bigger quiver for 1700 points (which I got) and a heart container at 200 (which I didn’t get, and don’t really plan to).

you missed the real reason for the CycloDS.  you can put <span class="caps">ROM</span>s on it: <span class="caps">NES</span>, Gameboy, <span class="caps">GBA</span>, Gamegear, Turbografix16, DS, and (maybe) genesis and <span class="caps">SNES</span>.

  • Jeremy – I don’t have any other games right now. A lawyer game???? I’ll have to add that to my Amazon wishlist. Next I will probably get Brain Age 1 and 2, and some form of Mario.

Batman – I find both the target and ghost shooting games really hard. I don’t think I was even close to the high scores. I already have a bomb bag that holds 20 bombs – do you mean it’s a larger capacity bomb bag? Oooh… <span class="caps">ROM</span>s. Did you check out the R4 add-on? I think it’s similar to CycloDS…

  • the R4 and CycloDS are pretty similar.  This site does a pretty good job of reviewing them both (along with some other flash carts) in the “Articles” section.  You have to create a login to see the articles. (I don’t recommend using your primary email address.) Probably more important is to read his review of various MicroDS cards performance, speed wise.  If the read/write speed is too slow, it will cause problems with some games.

Also, when deciding which game to invest your money in, this site is extremely helpful.  It’s like rotten tomatoes for video games, averaging 80+ different reviews, with links to alll of them.  I generally don’t buy a game with a score below about 85% unless I’ve played it an know I like it.

Here are my suggestions on the shooting games.  First the cannon game:

The boat travels in a horse-shoe shape, with all of the targets on the outside, except a red one at the apex of the curve.  You need to maximize the amount of time shooting (and minimize the amount of time scrolling to find the next target).  Tap maniacally on the red targets (that you can hit multiple times).  The tapping will make small adjustments to the canon angle, so you shouldn’t have to scroll to stay on target.  When your cannon is about 90° counterclockwise (ccw) from the direction youre traveling, its time to scroll clockwise (cw) to shoot at the upcoming blue target.  Don’t bother shooting at the blue target more than once.  If you miss a blue one, you probably won’t make the high score, so just use the rest of the round to practice at the remaining targets.  So as soon as you take a shot at the blue target, scroll cw to start hitting the next red target.

There are 2 times you break this pattern.  The first is when you approach the apex of the curve.  Keep shooting the last outside red target and turning ccw until its behind you and too far away to hit anymore, but then keep scrolling ccw to catch the inside red target at the apex.  Shoot it as many times as you can.  When its out of range, then continue scrolling ccw to get to the next outside red target.  So you should have rotated the canon a full 360° ccw over the course of the curve.

The other exception is on the last 2 targets.  There is a pretty big gap between them, so get a few extra shots on the 2nd from last before scrolling to go to the final target.

Once you memorize the pattern, you’ll make pretty steady progress every time you play.  I was eventually able to get almost 2200 points.

    The Arrow game:

I’m not great here, but i did beat the first record this way.  Lay on your stomach with your chin on a pillow and the DS pretty much right in front of your nose. Don’t look directly at the bottom screen at all while you’re playing.  You just want to look “across” it towards the top screen, so the bottom screen is sort of in your peripheral vision.  Then when you shoot arrows, instead of tapping, tap in the center of the bottom screen and drag quickly in the direction you want to shoot and lift the stylus (sort of like making checkmarks).  The arrow will pass through the point where you lift the stylus.  That advantage of this is it makes it easier to keep your hand and muscles ‘calibrated’ with the location of the screen, so by building some muscle memory, you can get pretty accurate at hitting a specific point without looking at the bottom screen at all.  It also feeels a lot more natural to me.  The first few tries, don’t worry about not hitting the girls.  Just shoot at everything until your fairly accurate, then work on only hitting the desired targets.

  • DS and DS . . . <span class="caps">CSS</span> and <span class="caps">CSS</span> . . . so clever!

  • Batman – I followed your tips for the cannon game, and I beat it! Thanks. I’m gonna try the ghost game next time I find it… I’m starting to lose track of which things are on which islands. No wonder this game is taking me so long, haha. I’m not sure how I feel about <span class="caps">ROMS</span>… it feels like downloading music and movies for free.

Turtie – Welcome! Hehe, that’s my husband and his infrequent and random but hilarious jokes…
