Back in Maryland

Dave and I flew to Baltimore yesterday. We’ll be spending the next few days with my family. I haven’t been back here in a year. The house always looks different every time I return. This time it’s the nicely furnished basement, a new lamp in the living room, and a soymilk maker. That thing is awesome. After soaking soybeans overnight, you just dump them in, push a button, and it grinds and strains them. Fresh soymilk, just like that.

It’s also weird to see my old room. All the books accumulated throughout my pre-college life, and some college, sitting untouched on my bookshelf, along with my college diploma shoved into the upper corner. A row of my old journals, not increasing lately because I haven’t been writing. The sparse closet that gets emptier every year.

I was surprised my mom put up a Christmas tree. Usually it’s a group effort. The simple decorations and the pile of presents already underneath are quite nice. It’s strange to think I’ve spent every Christmas of my life in Maryland, except 2003 in Taiwan.

Time to go see my mom’s gallery.
