We haven’t totally unpacked, not because we haven’t had the time, but because we’re not sure how committed we are to this new place. There have been some problems with cleanliness and functionality which I won’t bore you with. Suffice to say that they are enough in the aggregate to make us seriously think about moving again.
There are a lot of factors to weigh, such as the cost and headache of packing and unpacking again, the possible effect on our credit reports if this counts as a lease-break (or at least the effect on future housing applications), whether or not our landlords will even go for the idea of either subletting, assigning, or terminating the lease…
I know God brought us here for a reason despite all the unpleasantness, so I will have joy whatever happens. I can enjoy myself anywhere, I’ve decided. It’s all about the inner attitude.

We’ve been here for a week now, and our place still has STUFF strewn all over it. We’ve already thrown out or donated a couple big boxes of old clothes, things we haven’t touched in years, etc. But it’s still everywhere.
It’s time to be merciless. An analogy I like to use is, the space in my place all has a rental price. Whatever object is in that space must be able to justify itself and “pay its rent.” If not, it either gets moved to somewhere less desirable or thrown out altogether.
The hardest to deal with are books, though. I love my books, even those I’ve never read and probably never will. Dave will probably push me to be more selective.
To give you an idea of how much stuff we have/had when we moved, our movers receipt says they packed 51 boxes of stuff. That doesn’t even include the 6 garment boxes of clothes and bedding that they had us unpack upon arrival and didn’t let us keep.
Dave’s like, lets cut it down to 40 boxes. That still sounds like too much!

Our new place is slowly getting more tolerable and normal. Until yesterday, which was my day off so we made good progress with unpacking, it was simply unpleasant to be inside surrounded by all the boxes and paper (oh, endless paper). Since this is an older building, there are things we didn’t have to deal with in Irvine (sigh), such as getting drawer and cabinet liners for the old and crusty surfaces.
The most unexpected thing is that our three remaining betta fish seem to be enjoying their new spot on top of the fireplace. I even did the most life threatening thing yesterday that I can relate to the other fish’s mysterious deaths, i.e. a water change, and all of them were just fine afterward, even the one that flipped himself into the sink.
When we find our camera cable, I’ll upload some pictures of our new place. We’ll be having a housewarming soon too, hopefully before the end of the month. (Batman – when are you moving?)
Hmm… is the plural of fish “fish,” or “fishes”?
